Match Report by David McIntyre

The sun was shining on Broadwood for the much-anticipated match between Broomhill – holding the league’s best defensive record – and Cumbernauld Colts with the joint-top goalscorer in the league, Billy Mortimer.

Broomhill manager Stephen Swift was aware that this was going to be a tough match today as Cumbernauld Colts were coming into the match in good form and Broomhill had not won in their last three.

It seemed that the team was keen to respond to recent disappointment, and they could not have asked for a better start to the match because in the third minute, they were awarded a penalty which Paul Kennedy converted, his third goal of the season.

Most of Broomhill’s success this season has been because of their excellent defence which was being tested by the Colts attack and after a clumsy challenge Cumbernauld equalised after being awarded a penalty of their own in the eleventh minute.

The game settled down after the early drama in the match with neither goalkeeper being properly tested. If the Broomhill attackers had timed some of their runs slightly better, they could have had a few chances but for the offside flag.

The second half was very similar to the end of the second half without there being too much action at either goal until Cumbernauld Colts’ right-back Keelan Adams was able to run into the box and bury the Colts’ second goal of the game, pulling his shot across the face of goal and beating Luke Scullion.

With nothing to lose, Broomhill created a few half chances in the final minutes but nothing troubled Cumbernauld’s keeper. However, despite the result, there were some positives that Stephen and his boys can take forward into their next match against Civil Service Strollers this Tuesday.
