A week before the Scottish Cup, Broomhill had a Sunday match against the University of Stirling. In the opening exchanges, Broomhill looked the brighter of the two teams. Considering the depleted squad at Stephen Swift’s disposal, he would have been encouraged. The manager was forced to shuffle the team before kick-off due to an injury suffered in the warm-up.

Despite the bright start, the Uni team took an early lead, giving Broomhill an uphill task for the second week running. Stirling continued to have most of the ball, but Broomhill created the next big chance. Ross Smith headed just wide of the post from a long-range free-kick. It would have been an easy tap-in had someone anticipated it.

Broomhill finished the half with a brighter spell, and the team carried that momentum forward into the second half. Two big chances within the first ten minutes of the restart fell to both Broomhill forwards. Corey O’Donnell went for an acrobatic effort whilst Martin Grehan missed by a slim margin. If someone had been at the back post, it was an easy tap-in, like Smith’s header.

You would be forgiven for thinking that Broomhill would turn things around although time was moving on. A red card was brandished to the home side after a second yellow card and without a full bench to make changes from it looked like a tough ask for the team to bring the game back. Things got worse for the Broom as a substitute that came on had to leave the pitch, adding to Broomhill’s injury list. The game petered away from them as the Uni scored two late goals in the final minutes.

The boys will have to dust themselves off and look ahead to a massive Scottish Cup tie. They travel away to Cumnock Juniors for a place in the last 32.
