Match Report | Beith Juniors vs Broomhill | 1-3 | Scottish Cup | Bellsdale Park

by David McIntyre

Broomhill has qualified for the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup after a terrific performance away to West of Scotland Football League champions Beith Juniors.

Cup ties can often be getting a result no matter how the team plays, but Broomhill manager Stephen Swift mapped out the perfect game plan to frustrate and open a Beith side that has been dominant in the West of Scotland league. The first half was crucial to the match due to the sloped pitch, but the defence held strong. After roughly 20 minutes, it was the visitors that took control of the game. The Broom created promising opportunities by exploiting the wide areas with good movements from the forward line. Broomhill were the first team off the blocks in the second half as Ally McColm knocked in Paul Kennedy’s precise free-kick, McColm’s 4th goal in two matches that gave the visitors a deserved lead. The goal motivated Broomhill, and it wasn’t a long wait before Scott Roberts latched onto a flick-on from centre-forward Martin Grehan and headed home Broomhill’s second.

People say that a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous in football, and this could’ve been true on this day as Beith quickly got themselves back into the tie with their striker tapping the ball in at the back post. The Broomhill bench were left nervously waiting for the whistle to go for full-time to avoid Beith equalising and taking the match to extra time.

Scott Roberts was the hero again as he added a 3rd for Broomhill to take the edge off a fiery second half and fire Broomhill into the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup, where they will travel to play Cumnock Juniors.
