League: South Challenge Cup

Broomhill FC vs Irvine Meadow

Match Report | Broomhill vs Irvine Meadow | 0-1 | The Rock

by David McIntyre

This potential banana skin of a tie proved to be a slippery one for Broomhill as Irvine Meadow earned a deserved victory in the Second Round of the South Challenge Cup.

The visitors from the West of Scotland Football League Premier Division came to The Rock having only won one of their opening seven league matches and also having lost their manager in the lead-up to the match. In a classic new manager bounce, it was Martin Ferry’s Meadow side that proved to be the more creative of the two sides, as the Broom found scoring opportunities few and far between.

In a match that did not offer too much excitement from either side, ultimately it was decided by an unfortunate own goal as Broomhill could not clear from a set-piece and saw the ball take an flick off a defender and cross the line from point blank range.

While it was a disappointing day for the men in blue and white, supporters were given a boost by the return of Ally McColm. The summer signing from Kilwinning Rangers had missed the start of the season through injury.

It is unfortunate that Broomhill have been eliminated from the cup so early on, but they have the opportunity to rectify the defeat as they enter the Scottish Cup at the First Round stage this coming weekend against Cumbernauld Colts. Kick off is 2pm on Sunday 24th September at The Rock.
